So you want to be a dad that raises your kids “right” and teaches them all the “important” things in life? That it? Sounds like something just about every man in America would say he would want to do as a parent.
We pray and we plead and we think maybe we’ve got this parenting thing figured out and then all of a sudden … wham! They say or do something and you cannot believe that is really your child. It happens to ALL of us.
“How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.”
Psalm 119:9-11
God (who by the way, cannot lie) says that a man keeps his way pure by walking according to His Word. By treasuring God’s Word in his heart.
How does God’s Word get there? Well, the Holy Spirit has an important role to play in leading and revealing but there is something we must do and that is to take the time and focus in actually reading and memorizing scripture.
WE ARE GUYS AND MEMORIZING IS SCARY! And teach my kids too? NO WAY! You must and can do this for your family. Choose a translation that is easy to understand, take in account the age of your children and RESOLVE NOW TO DO THIS! Your child’s heart is at stake!
Here are some suggestions to get started. Make it your goal to memorize weekly:
- The 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17)
- Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18)
- Trust God (Proverbs 3:5-6)
- God’s Requirements (Micah 6:8)
- God’s Protection (Psalm 23)
- God’s Plan (John 3:16)
